HSRP Parameters

We configured the HSRP on two routers and here is the status of both routers.

R2 says it is Active router.

R1 says it is Standby router and active router is the one that has IP address 192.168.0.3.

Now we turn off the active router and see the status of this router.

Now R1 says that it is active router and it is the only router running HSRP because it says that it does not know any standby router.

HSRP Roles

There are three roles that are assigned to the routers when they are participating in HSRP. The identical scenario is that we have two routers one is primary and other is secondary.
There could be a case where you are asked to add more than two routers in the HSRP, there could be up to 8 routers that can be added to HSRP.

The three roles are Active, Standby, and Other.

Active is the router that is moving the traffic back and forth.
Standby is the router who is ready to take the responsibility of active router in case active router fails.
Other are all the other routers that do not have active or standby role, but when active goes down and standby take seat of active then other do an election among them and decide who will be next standby router.

Router Priority

By default HSRP assigns priority number of 100 to every router that comes into the HSRP and the decision is made of First Come First Serve algorithm.

We can assign the priority numbers to routers to make sure who becomes active and who goes to standby role. The one with higher priority number gets active and other gets standby.
This priority works when you configure both routers and after configuration you start the interfaces but of you are already running HSRP and there is one active router you cannot make a router active despite assigning the higher priority number.

There is a solution for that let’s say we want R1 to keep active and when R1 goes down the R2 will become active and now when R1 comes back to life again it will be on standby role because there is already an active router. Let’s say we want to keep R1 active despite when it goes down and comes back to life again so there is a parameter preemption that does this. Enable the preemption on the router you want to keep active and the router will remain active.

There you go the router has enabled preemption and it has higher priority number and it will remain active now.

R2 has default priority number which is lower than R1 priority number and it has also preemption disabled so it will always remain standby unless R1 goes off.
